Signs You Have Septic Tank Issues

Any property owner would be devastated by septic system problems. Due to the harsh nature of the waste, septic damage, unlike water damage can create unsuitable living conditions. Routine septic inspections can reduce the risks of significant damage greatly.

If you have a septic system, it is imperative that you start educating yourself about it.  Recognizing what these indicators are will enable you to contact a technician and identify any possible issues before waste overflows into your yard or into your home’s plumbing system. Here are signs you have septic tank issues.

A Clogged Drain

One or more clogged drains in your house are one of the earliest indicators that something is wrong with your septic system. If your drains start to slow down, you should try to clean the drain. You may accomplish this with home remedies such as using a plunger, a snake, or pouring hot water down the drain.

If your drain clogs continuously, it’s likely this is more serious than a clog caused by hair, food, or soap. When your septic system isn’t draining properly or is full, it can back up into your drains and create problems similar to a clog.

Foul Smells On Your Lawn

Foul odors on your lawn are also evidence of probable septic system issues. A fecal-like odor often emerges from your septic tank and the pipes that run to and from the tank. On windy days, the odor can spread faster.

You shouldn’t smell odors from your lawn. This is a significant sign that something is wrong with your septic system. These could all be a result of a pipe breaking, leak, a full tank, or a tank not draining correctly.

Grass Changes

You’ll notice modifications in the grass right above your septic tank if you do not address possible septic system problems in a reasonable timeframe. When your septic system starts to overflow, you’ll begin to see stuff seep out. Typically, the roots of the grass well above the tank will collect this debris.

If a substantial amount of fecal matter is seeping from your tank, the grass above your septic tank will get greener. This is a result of waste being fertilized. If the substance spilling from your tank has a high concentration of cleaning detergents, soap, or urine, the grass above your tank will turn brown, yellow, or even die.

Schedule Routine Checkups

Professionals in septic tanks recommend scheduling a maintenance check at least every two years. If it’s been two years or more since your previous service, your tank is more likely to develop complications. In addition, your tank, like all the other equipment in your home, will need to be replaced at some point.

If your tank is 20 years or older, consider repairs, or replacing. Schedule regular inspections and pumps if you don’t know how old your tank is. This assessment can tell you what to expect from the tank’s performance over the next few years.

Puddles Forming on Your Lawn

Random puddles on your lawn are the last indicator that something is up with your septic tank. These puddles could be watery or include waste and feces. There are usually other warning signals before this happens, but if they are neglected or overlooked, this is the result.

If you discover puddles in your yard that didn’t come from rain or sprinklers, you should contact a septic repair agency immediately. They may need to defuse and clean up the trash before they can begin the inspection and maintenance operation.

If you have a septic system and discover clogged drains, foul odors on your property, puddles accumulating on your lawn, or changes in the grass around your septic tank, you should get it examined. There is a significant possibility that something is wrong with your drainage, and if the issue is not resolved, sewage can overflow into your lawn or house.
